Design and Delight

We have been encouraging our children to think about design in terms of delight, as well as usefulness, so we arranged a different design lesson. we started by placing fun safe items on each table. We gave children time to move around each table and take time to explore or play as appropriate. Once seated back in their groups, we gave the pupils three tasks:
1. To say what they liked about the items and express their enjoyment
2. To say what guided the selection of the items
3. To decide on the purpose of the items

We discussed the ideas of the task and  explored the ideas of the designs whose primary purpose is to bring delight rather than just be useful. We considered the idea of delight and delightful. This led to us thinking about what good things might bring delight to different people. We then asked the children to work on designs and invited the parents to create with their children.
